Printer setup & support

Setup guides, troubleshooting fixes, and direct links to the right manufacturer support page.

Heads up: who we can help. Hands-on customer support (account help, order issues, returns, and replacements) is available for customers who bought their printer from Refkart.shop. If you bought yours somewhere else, the setup tips below should still help. For warranty or repair questions, please go to the manufacturer using the links further down.

6 universal printer-setup steps

  1. Unbox and remove tape. Take off all packaging tape and protective film, including under the lid and around the cartridges. A piece left behind is the number-one cause of paper jams during the first print.
  2. Power on and install ink or toner. Plug in the power cable, turn on the printer, and follow the onscreen prompts to install the starter cartridges. You will hear a head-alignment sound. That is the sign that everything is working.
  3. Connect to Wi-Fi. Use the printer touchscreen to pick your home network. Most home printers need 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, not 5GHz. Keep your router password handy.
  4. Install the manufacturer app. Download the official app for your brand: HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson Smart Panel, or Brother iPrint&Scan. The app finds your printer and finishes the driver setup for you.
  5. Run a test print. Print the manufacturer test page from Settings, then Reports, then Print Quality. Check that all colors look crisp and the lines are aligned. If anything looks off, run the printer auto-alignment routine.
  6. Set up mobile printing (optional). On iPhone, AirPrint is already built in. Just tap Share, then Print. On Android, install Mopria Print Service or your printer brand's app. The phone and printer have to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

Common printer-setup questions

My printer will not connect to Wi-Fi. What do I do?

Most Wi-Fi problems come down to three things: a wrong network password, the printer trying to use 5GHz when it only supports 2.4GHz, or your router firewall blocking the printer. Reset Wi-Fi on the printer, make sure your router is broadcasting on 2.4GHz, and try again.

Where do I download the printer driver?

Always download drivers straight from the manufacturer at hp.com/support, canon.com/support, epson.com/support, or brother-usa.com/support. Skip third-party "driver finder" sites. They often bundle adware.

My printer prints blank pages. What is wrong?

It is usually one of four things: low ink or toner, a clogged inkjet print head (run the cleaning cycle from the printer settings), the wrong paper type selected, or cartridges installed in the wrong slots.

How do I print from my phone?

On iPhone, use AirPrint, which is already built in. Just tap Share, then Print. On Android, install the manufacturer app: HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson Smart Panel, or Brother iPrint&Scan. Both your phone and printer have to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

Why is my color printer printing in black and white only?

Open Print Settings, go to Color or Quality, and make sure Color or Auto is selected. Some apps default to grayscale. If a color cartridge is empty, the printer can also force black-only mode until you replace it.
